Royal Society elects Professor Sadaf Farooqi

Today the Royal Society announced that Professor Sadaf Farooqi, Professor of Metabolism and Medicine, Wellcome-MRC Institute of Professor Sadaf Farooqi Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge, is among this year’s newly elected fellows.

Professor Farooqi is distinguished for her discoveries of fundamental mechanisms that control human energy homeostasis and their disruption in obesity and evolutionary biologist. This translational research has all been carried out here, in Cambridge.

Professor Farooqi said: “As a Clinician and Scientist, I am absolutely delighted to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This prestigious honour recognises the work of many team members past and present, our network of collaborators and the patients and families who played a vital role in this research.”

Professor Sir Stephen O’Rahilly,  has said of her achievement: ”This is the UK’s ultimate recognition of scientific prowess and a fitting tribute to Sadaf’s wonderful achievements in obesity research. Please join me in congratulating her on this fantastic news.”

The Royal Society have, over 60 outstanding scientists from all over the globe as Fellows and Foreign Members. The distinguished group of scientists consists of 52 Fellows, 10 Foreign Members and one Honorary Fellow and were all selected for their exceptional contributions to science.

Their achievements and research are diverse and range from the detection of a new type of neuron in the human brain and the design and development of new vaccines for globally important infectious diseases to a new way of looking at Einstein’s theory of general relativity and contributing to understanding the link between the increase in sea levels and global warming.

The Royal Society’s new Fellows and Foreign Members are all at the forefronts of their fields from molecular genetics and cancer research to tropical open ecosystems and radar technology.
