We’re one of very few facilities in the world to offer this facility. The rooms can calculate energy expenditure by measuring oxygen and carbon dioxide consumption and production. This can take place from overnight to 7 days. Once participants enter the room, they remain in the room for the duration of the visit. The rooms are equipped with TV/DVD, iPads and wifi to make any stay comfortable and entertaining.
Dual-energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA). This involves the measurement of bone density, fat tissue and lean tissue (muscle + organs). The device uses small doses of radiation so checks are performed before scanning a patient or participant. The measurement is very quick and provides images of whole body skeletons for bone density and whole body soft tissue outlines for fat and lean mass. The results are fed back at the end of the scan.
This involves the estimation of body volume, which requires no radiation at all – so it can be used in pregnancy. You simply sit inside the Bod Pod for a couple of minutes and it measures precisely how much air you displace. Your body’s volume is the difference between the volume of air in the empty Bod Pod and when you’re sitting in it. Because we know the density of fat and that of the rest of your body, we can calculate how much body fat you have
Specially designed kitchen where we measure precisely the nutrients and calories in the food we prepare on-site. We can then identify exactly what effect they have on patient and volunteer’s metabolism.
A bespoke area equipped with measurement techniques of body composition by DXA and BodPod, along with energy expenditure techniques by indirect whole-body room calorimeters and portable ventilated hood calorimeters. Also equipped with exercise testing equipment by treadmill and ergometer including exercising gas exchange.
